It's actually the evil creature that's lurking in the Armory's vault who somehow used Elena's voice to lure Damon into a trap. According to executive producer Brian Young, the fact that Bonnie (Kat Graham) was given Rayna's life doesn't change her bond with Elena -- meaning that Elena can still only return if Bonnie dies.
